Liverpool right-back Conor Bradley is making steady progress in his recovery from a serious knee injury, but Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has revealed that the specifics of the player’s rehabilitation remain strictly confidential.
It has now been four-and-a-half months since the 22-year-old suffered severe knee damage during Liverpool’s tense 0-0 draw away to Arsenal.
The incident was marred by controversy when Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli shoved the writhing defender off the pitch in shocking scenes, prompting immediate concerns that the physical altercation had aggravated the injury.
Following successful surgery, Bradley has recently returned to light duties at the AXA Training Centre, where he has been spotted engaging in gym work and early load-bearing exercises.
Michael O’Neill on Conor Bradley’s return timeline
Speaking to reporters ahead of Northern Ireland’s upcoming international friendlies against Guinea and France, Michael O’Neill was pressed for an update on his star defender. However, the international boss maintained that Liverpool are keeping a tight lid on the situation.
O’Neill stated that the medical details are currently:
“…confidential between the club and the player.”
Despite the secrecy, the manager confirmed he remains in constant contact with the young full-back.
“Obviously, we have interaction with Conor quite regularly,” O’Neill said, per BBC Sport. “He sent me a text on my new contract, congratulating me. I spoke to him last week. He’s doing well, you know, he’s making progress, but like it’s not for me to put any type of timeline on that progress at this minute in time. We just want him back, fit and healthy, of course we do, as do Liverpool, but it’s important that how that injury is handled.”
While the initial hope was to see Bradley fully fit for the start of Liverpool’s pre-season, there is reportedly less certainty surrounding his return date compared to fellow long-term absentees Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni.
With over a month left until the Reds report back to the AXA Training Centre, Bradley will continue his focused rehabilitation behind closed doors.
Kieran Morrison earns fresh Northern Ireland call-up
While Bradley misses out, another Liverpool starlet is making waves on the international stage. Versatile youngster Kieran Morrison has retained his place in O’Neill’s 23-man squad for June’s friendlies.
Morrison was previously called up for March’s crucial play-off fixture but did not feature in Bergamo or during the friendly against Wales. Given the slim squad size, there is a strong possibility the academy graduate could make his senior international debut over the next fortnight.
However, O’Neill urged caution regarding the expectations placed on his youngest prospects:
“It’s difficult to say they’re ready to be senior international players. We have to be mindful of that. They’ve had limited minutes at first-team level, but they’re in our pathway and we have to protect that and we have to show them the route to playing for ourselves and being a senior international, and that they’re highly regarded within our pathway as well.”
O’Neill admitted he bypassed more experienced options to prioritise long-term squad development, emphasizing that players competing at the highest possible club level will ultimately elevate the national team.
“We’ll continue to monitor all our players, and hopefully certain players may get the opportunity to make that jump,” O’Neill explained. “We’ve already seen players now like Eoin Toal now in the Championship, Paddy McNair is now in the Premier League. Some of those lads that are playing around maybe League Two, League One, can they get the opportunity to play higher as well? Players who are playing in Scotland, can they get the opportunity to play in a better club maybe within Scotland?”
Addressing his decision to snub seasoned pros for youth talent like Morrison, O’Neill added:
“There are players that I could include instead of those younger players. If I’m honest, I don’t feel that they’re playing the club football at a high enough level that would affect the starting 11 at this minute in time. So for me, the emphasis has to be on using some of the squad in terms of development.”
