Ornstein Transfer Update: Liverpool in ‘Strongest Position’ to Sign Yan Diomande

In what is shaping up to be the first major blockbuster transfer saga of the summer, Liverpool have positioned themselves at the front of the queue for RB Leipzig’s teenage sensation, Yan Diomande.

The 19-year-old winger has been identified by the Anfield hierarchy as the perfect long-term successor to the departing club legend, Mohamed Salah.

Despite his tender age, the Ivorian international has taken European football by storm, courting intense interest from the world’s biggest clubs after just a single, breathtaking season in the Bundesliga.

While RB Leipzig are publicly maintaining a determination to retain the Ivory Coast winger for at least one more season to aid his development, senior figures at the German club have not ruled out a blockbuster sale if a “gigantic” bid is placed on the table.

Ornstein bombshell: Liverpool leading PSG in transfer race

While the list of elite clubs tracking Diomande’s rapid rise is lengthy, the battle for his signature has essentially boiled down to a high-stakes, two-horse race between Liverpool and French heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain.

According to a major update from highly trusted The Athletic reporter David Ornstein, the Merseyside club has done extensive groundwork and currently holds the upper hand over the Parisians. Liverpool are understood to be further along in negotiations and find themselves in the driver’s seat to secure personal terms with the forward.

Ornstein declared: “The Merseyside club are in the strongest position with the player over a potential deal at present.”

This crucial advantage comes on the heels of another major breakthrough: Liverpool have officially bypassed intermediaries and opened direct, club-to-club talks with Leipzig to hash out the framework of a transfer.

Breaking the bank: The massive €130m price tag

Securing a talent of Diomande’s caliber will not come cheap. Reports throughout the early months of 2026 had generally pointed to a substantial valuation in the region of €100 million (£86 million). However, Ornstein has dropped a transfer bombshell by revealing that Leipzig’s asking price has skyrocketed following intense inquiries.

The German side is now demanding a fee “in excess” of €130 million (£112 million) to sanction a move this summer.

Should Liverpool agree to meet that astronomical valuation, the elevated price tag would comfortably make the teenage winger the third most expensive signing in the club’s entire history, trailing only behind historic deals for Darwin Núñez and Virgil van Dijk.

While a £112 million fee could cause Liverpool’s transfer committee some hesitation, Anfield chiefs can take comfort in the fact that PSG are also reluctant to engage in an uncontrolled bidding war.

Crucially, Ornstein noted that the back-to-back Champions League winners “are not currently as advanced as Liverpool” when it comes to the meticulous background work required to pull off a deal of this magnitude.

Furthermore, the French champions have yet to open direct, formal channels of communication with Leipzig, leaving the door wide open for Liverpool to strike.

With direct club talks now active and personal terms well within reach, the ball is firmly in Liverpool’s court to see if they will trigger the definitive bid to bring the Bundesliga’s most exciting young winger to Anfield.
