Joel Matip out for the season with foot injury

Liverpool defender Joel Matip will sit out the remaining seven games of the season after he injured his foot during the 0-0 draw with Everton.

Matip suffered the injury at Goodison Park on June 21st after what looked like an innocuous challenge with Everton forward Richarlison and whilst Jurgen Klopp was hopeful that the issue wasn’t serious, it turns out that the central defender will now miss the remaining seven games of Liverpool’s 2019/2020 campaign.

He told the club’s official website:

This season I will be not back on the pitch but for next season, I hope I’m going to be, quite early, a direct help for the team.

Given that Liverpool have already secured the Premier League title, it makes perfect sense to give Matip all the time he needs to allow his foot to heal properly ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, where Liverpool will be looking to defend their crown.

Starting this Thursday, the Reds will play seven games in just 24 days, so rotation of the squad will be needed. Klopp has Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren and Virgil van Dijk at his disposal, but he may well decide to call upon a youngster to play in games too, if he feels that one or more of his senior players could do with a break.

In that case, Sepp van den Berg and Ki-Jana Hoever could well come into the mix.
