Jurgen Klopp has recounted Andy Robertson’s glittering Liverpool career and how much he improved in such a short space of time at Anfield when speaking at length about the Scotsman’s approaching farewell in a new interview.
Liverpool fans will be emotional entering Anfield on the final day of the 2025/26 Premier League season, as the Merseyside masses wave goodbye to two exceptional servants of the club in Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.
Thankfully, AFC Bournemouth’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Tuesday evening, which handed Arsenal the title, means that – barring an almighty goal swing – Arne Slot‘s men will be playing in the Champions League next season, even if they were to lose to Brentford to round off a topsy-turvy season.
This means the main focus will be on giving both the Egyptian and his Scottish teammate the best farewell imaginable, with fan mosaics of the decorated duo to be unveiled ahead of the Bees game kicking off.
It would be some celebration if both Salah and Robertson were to get on the scoresheet, as Liverpool resoundingly picked up three points.
In the build-up to this poignant Anfield farewell, Reds-based site The Anfield Wrap has put together its own tribute to the Scottish full-back, with the likes of Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – who played alongside Robertson at Liverpool – offering their own heartfelt tributes to the defender.
Alongside his former teammates, Jurgen Klopp has also offered his own thoughts on Robertson’s distinguished stay on Merseyside coming to a close, with the German fondly recalling when the 32-year-old first entered the building during the early days of his tenure.
Klopp’s sincere comments on Robertson’s journey
“One Of Us: Becoming Andy Robertson” a 55-minute documentary by Liverpool fan channel The Anfield Wrap chronicles the Glaswegian’s remarkable transformation from a raw Hull City signing trying to find his feet, into one of the world’s elite left-backs.
Former manager Jürgen Klopp features prominently throughout the video, offering insight into a massive Anfield journey that he helped guide from day one.
He recounts first signing the former Tigers defender, with the Scotsman’s defending in Yorkshire leaving a lot to be desired, as he attempted to make the step up to perform for the Reds.
Klopp said: “Signing Robbo taught me so much, because it’s the thing, you see a player, don’t know the man, the boy at that time maybe.
“You don’t know him, but you see a player, you watch the videos, and when you see Robbo at Hull playing, you see his potential offensively, and you see his weaknesses. He was involved in so many goals Hull conceded on his far post! It’s like crazy, it’s like he’s not there.
“And then we simply had the conversation, and my house informed me. Robbo came with his agent, and we had a great talk. You cannot imagine today, but a really shy boy. Really didn’t speak a lot, it’s so funny, when you think back on that.”
“And, I told him, so I like everything about what you’re doing offensively, and I don’t think I like anything about all the things you do defensively.
“So, if you agree on working on that and you pay completely in, and stuff like that, then we will have a lot of fun together.”
While Robertson would initially struggle at Liverpool, the Scotsman would quickly get up to speed with what was expected of him in his new environment, with a stunning 11 assists collected from 36 Premier League appearances during the 2018/19 campaign.

Winning the Champions League that same season, Robertson would then go on to lift the Premier League under Klopp’s guidance, with the German noting that he was “definitely the best LB in the world” at one stage of his esteemed Reds career.
All good things must come to an end, however, and Robertson has decided now is the right time to walk away from Anfield, after a wonderful nine-year association with the club.
He hasn’t fizzled out, either, as Slot has routinely picked him this season when he’s needed a dependable defensive body. He also hoisted another Premier League title aloft during the Dutchman’s unbelievable debut season, adding yet another trophy to his Liverpool collection in the process.
Closing out his interview, Klopp emotively said: “One of the best guys I ever met. One of the best signings I ever did.”
“And in a super interesting kind of way, with this interesting story. Because signing Robbo taught me so much. I am proud of him, but I hope he is proud of himself.”
There will not be a dry eye in the house when Robertson brings down the curtain on his memorable nine-year Anfield stay against Brentford, with one final win a fitting way to close out this unforgettable chapter of his playing days.
