Liverpool prepare improved bid for Leipzig star Yan Diomande

Liverpool are pressing ahead with their ambitious summer rebuild as the club looks to provide Andoni Iraola with the tools required to launch a genuine Premier League title challenge.

Following a deeply disappointing final season under former head coach Arne Slot who was sacked at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, Anfield officials are moving with a ruthless efficiency in the transfer market, and teenage sensation Yan Diomande has emerged as the absolute priority.

The Reds have already delivered a major statement of intent. On Thursday, Liverpool swiftly wrapped up a £34 million (€40m/$45m) deal for Osasuna winger Victor Muñoz, triggering his release clause and comfortably beating Newcastle United to his signature.

Crucially, club insiders stress that the arrival of Muñoz does not alter Liverpool’s pursuit of Diomande. The RB Leipzig starlet remains the primary target, having long been earmarked by recruitment staff as the ideal long-term successor to Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool have maintained what sources describe as “almost daily contact” with the player’s camp since December, ensuring they hold a commanding position in the race despite fierce competition from Paris Saint-Germain.

The respected David Ornstein provided a telling update on Thursday night, confirming that while PSG retain a firm interest, the French champions are currently lagging well behind the Merseyside club.

“These are all conversations between clubs until it actually gets to the point of formal offers being sent over. You normally do [that] when you believe a player is committed to you. You don’t tend to pursue a player and make offers if you don’t know that you’ve got an agreement or you’re in line to get an agreement on player terms.

It’s really interesting, as far as I know Liverpool have gone the highest at this point in time. PSG’s interest is firm, it’s strong, they want to sign him, but it was described to me that they’re quite far behind at the moment.”

Leipzig hold out for premium fee as Liverpool prepare next move

Liverpool have already tested the waters with a massive opening package worth a total of €100 million (£86.6m). Sky Germany understands that the informal proposal consisted of an initial €90 million (£78m) payment, with a further €10 million (£8.6m) structured in add-ons.

Leipzig promptly rejected that opening gambit, with the Bundesliga outfit demanding a fee “significantly above €100 million.”

The club’s stance will come as no surprise to Fenway Sports Group, who have previous experience dealing with the German side over high-profile deals for Naby Keïta and Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Times’ Paul Joyce notes that while Liverpool value the teenager around the €100m mark, Leipzig are holding out for a figure much closer to €130 million (£112.6m) before they sanction a departure.

“We’ve seen in the past that Leipzig do sell, even when they say they want to keep players, but they sell for the price they want,” Joyce said. “It’s up to the suitors to get to that price. So Liverpool have manoeuvred into a really strong position with this pursuit that’s gone on for quite some time now.”

Liverpool are currently structuring an improved second proposal to present to Leipzig. Senior figures at Anfield remain increasingly optimistic that a compromise can be reached, though the club has carefully vetted a shortlist of four alternative targets should negotiations reach an impasse.

This is a massive statement of intent from Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and sporting director Richard Hughes. Securing Victor Muñoz for a modest £34 million represents smart business, but the aggressive pursuit of Yan Diomande shows that Liverpool are ready to compete at the absolute top of the market to back Andoni Iraola.

Replacing Mohamed Salah’s output is the single biggest challenge facing this recruitment team over the next 12 months. Diomande possesses the world-class ceiling, pace, and tactical intelligence required to be that heir. Leipzig are notoriously stubborn negotiators, but they have a clear selling model.

If Liverpool want to bridge the gap to Manchester City and Arsenal, they need to pay the premium required to land Europe’s elite talent.
