Roy Keane puts himself in Arne Slot’s position after Mohamed Salah outburst

The fallout from Mohamed Salah’s recent social media comments has sent shockwaves through Merseyside, dominating headlines and sparking intense debate among football pundits, former players, and fans alike.

Following Liverpool’s disappointing 4-2 defeat away to Aston Villa a match where the Egyptian superstar was surprisingly benched for the majority of the game before making a late cameo in his final away appearance for the club Salah took to his personal accounts to air his frustrations.

Urging the club to quickly “go back to their old ways,” Salah explicitly stated that simply qualifying for the Champions League should always be viewed as the absolute bare minimum for a club of Liverpool’s stature. While he refrained from naming individuals, reading between the lines heavily implies that his critical remarks were directed squarely at head coach Arne Slot.

The relationship between the player and manager has been a prominent talking point all season, with Salah previously admitting their dynamic had deteriorated.

Slot, too, has let his frustrations show, famously noting earlier in the year that his squad lacked a dynamic player like Jacob Murphy to adequately complement and help out the likes of Alexander Isak up front.

A fanbase deeply divided

Salah’s parting shots have effectively drawn a line in the sand, fracturing a fanbase that has otherwise enjoyed immense unity for the better part of a decade.

The Anfield faithful find themselves split into two fiercely opposing camps. On one side, several high-profile pundits, including Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, have publicly lashed out at the 33-year-old winger, arguing that it is entirely unprofessional to undermine the manager on the eve of his departure.

Conversely, a large section of the Kopites has rallied behind the “Egyptian King.” With Liverpool enduring a truly disastrous Premier League campaign that has seen them suffer 12 losses, many fans believe Salah is merely highlighting the harsh reality of the club’s current regression.

The Reds now face a high-stakes final day showdown against Brentford, where a positive result is desperately needed just to secure a top-five finish.

Roy Keane weighs In on Slot’s dilemma

One of the burning questions left unanswered is how Arne Slot will handle the immediate aftermath of this public disrespect. The Dutchman has not held a press conference since the remarks were made, though he is scheduled to face the media later this week ahead of the Brentford clash.

Speculation is rife that Slot could completely axe Salah from the matchday squad, denying him a final farewell appearance at Anfield if he deems the player’s behaviuor a threat to squad harmony.

However, Premier League legend and former manager Roy Keane believes the entire situation has been blown out of proportion. Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Keane put himself in Slot’s shoes and explained why the head coach shouldn’t lose sleep over the winger’s parting shots.

“I don’t know if it sounds good, but I wouldn’t be going ‘I tell you what, it’s out of order, it’s scandalous’. From a manager’s point of view, you’ve got that many problems. It’s not nice, but you’re going, it’s not my priority at the moment. His priority will obviously be thinking, let’s try and get a game out of it, Salah is leaving, let him get that off his chest, and I’m trying to rebuild the club for next year.”

With Salah’s departure guaranteed after the final whistle against Brentford, recruiting an elite replacement is priority number one. As players head off to the World Cup or their summer holidays, Slot must stay laser-focused on implementing a rebuild that aligns with the lofty expectations of the Anfield faithful: a definitive return to winning ways.

Salah’s comments have undoubtedly added fuel to an already raging fire. While it is hard to argue with his sentiment Liverpool should indeed never settle for just scraping into the Champions League places the timing and platform he chose to deliver this message were incredibly poor.

Publicly undermining Arne Slot on the eve of the season finale does nothing but create an uncomfortable atmosphere for a squad that is already low on confidence and fighting to secure a top-five finish.

Slot has handled an incredibly tough transitional season with a fair amount of dignity, despite not being handed all the necessary tools to maintain a title charge.

Roy Keane’s pragmatic advice is spot on here. Slot should completely filter out the noise, give Salah his final minutes if it serves the team against Brentford, and swiftly move on. With the backing of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, this summer represents a clean slate.

The focus must shift entirely away from departing legends and toward building a cohesive, disciplined squad capable of bringing silverware back to Anfield.
