Virgil van Dijk wants to sign a new contract with Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk has told Liverpool that he wants to sign a contract extension, according to Melissa Reddy of ESPN FC.

Van Dijk was one of Liverpool’s standout performers last season as the Reds capped off a remarkable campaign by winning the Champions League, following on from a Premier League campaign where they earned 97 points, just one fewer than champions Manchester City.

According to the report, Van Dijk told Liverpool about his desire to commit his long-term future to the club prior to Saturday’s Champions League final as he is completely happy at Anfield.

The 27-year-old signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with Liverpool when he joined the club in January 2018, so he still has four years left to run on his contract but he wants to reaffirm his commitment by extending that even further.

Van Dijk was named as the PFA Player of the Year last season and has been widely praised for his performances, so Liverpool will be keen to reward him too, but with four years left to run on his contract, there will be no immediate rush to get a deal done but it looks likely that the Dutch star will put pen-to-paper on a new contract in the near future.
