Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has come out to reveal who Joe Gomez could join in the summer, as his Liverpool contract continues to wind down.
While both Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson have received their flowers, ever since the bombshell news dropped that both decorated Liverpool players would be leaving Anfield at the close of the 2025/26 season, Joe Gomez‘s potential exit has slipped under the radar, in contrast.
Indeed, Gomez might not be as flashy as Salah or as daring in his defensive play as the Scotsman, but the 28-year-old does boast a hefty 273 appearances for the Reds over 11 years at the club.
Used sparingly this season when Arne Slot has needed some defensive reinforcements through injury, it will be another sad departure when the 6-foot-2 defender does walk away from Anfield.
This exit looks increasingly likely to take place this off-season, as Gomez enters the final year of his deal on Merseyside.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has even named the next onward destination the London-born centre-back could choose, as he embarks on the twilight years of his career, which has been exclusively spent in England.
Romano names Gomez’s next club
Speaking via his YouTube channel, Romano discussed the potential of Gomez leaving Liverpool behind during what will be a chaotic summer transfer window at Anfield.
With Jeremy Jacquet finally arriving on English shores to feature for Slot and Co. and the likes of Bradley Barcola tipped to join the Reds, a refresh is set to happen, as the old guard of Gomez is possibly moved on.
When quizzed on Gomez’s Merseyside future, Romano stated: “In recent days AC Milan have received information from those in charge of Joe Gomez’s future, and I can confirm that the player could be a transfer opportunity this summer.
“Milan had been very close to Joe Gomez in the last few days of the 2025 summer transfer window, and there had even been some fairly in-depth discussions. Then it happened that Liverpool were closing the deal of Marc Guehi but there was the problem of putting things together.
“Milan never got close [to Gomez] in January because Liverpool had so many injuries.
“So, releasing a player like Joe Gomez would have made little sense. Summer is another world.
“Liverpool will have new reinforcements, there will be new evaluations and Gomez could be a player considered to be on the market in case of attractive proposals. There are several teams interested. Milan, like other teams in the Premier League, have been informed of this possibility.”
The club with the most vocal interest in the 28-year-old is AC Milan, according to Romano, who nearly sealed a deal for the 15-time England international during the last summer transfer window, as Liverpool hunted down the signature of Marc Guehi.
At the last minute, a move fell through, but with the Serie A giants being told that there is another transfer opportunity on the horizon this off-season, Gomez could finally be moving to the San Siro.
Gomez’s fluctuating first-team minutes at Liverpool:
| Season | Total appearances | Minutes played |
| 23/24 | 51 | 3131 mins |
| 24/25 | 17 | 818 mins |
| 25/26 | 32 | 1385 mins |
With Gomez’s first-team minutes not what they used to be at Anfield, with a mammoth 51 appearances next to his name during the 2023/24 season when Jurgen Klopp was still positioned at the helm, next to only 17 matches during Slot’s debut campaign, it would make sense for the reserve defender to move on.
Before he possibly walks away, the dependable number two will hope he can feature in some capacity during the final day showdown with Brentford, as the Reds try to clinch Champions League football, to round off his 11-year stay on a positive note.

Losing Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson in a single summer is a catastrophic blow to the leadership group in the dressing room. But allowing Joe Gomez to walk out the door alongside them? That might just be the quietest, most devastating departure of the lot.
Gomez is the ultimate unsung hero of the modern Liverpool era. As the longest-serving player left at the club, he has been an exemplary servant across 11 years, bridging the gap from Brendan Rodgers to Jurgen Klopp, and now Arne Slot.
He has never been one to complain to the press or throw text-book tantrums when benched; instead, his unmatched positional versatility has bailed Liverpool out of countless defensive crises. Need a modern center-back? A clamping right-back? An emergency left-back? Gomez always stepped up.
However, football is a business of cold logistics. With his contract winding down to its final 12 months and his first-team minutes heavily fluctuating under Slot, a parting of ways makes total sense for all parties. Gomez turns 29 this month.
He is too good a defender to spend the prime years of his career as a luxury utility man waiting for an injury crisis. A move to a historic powerhouse like AC Milan, where former English centre-backs like Fikayo Tomori have absolutely thrived, feels like the perfect continental reset for him.
From an FSG perspective, this is the final chance to cash in on a player who still holds significant market value. It will free up wages and open a slot for incoming talent like Jeremy Jacquet. But make no mistake, replacing Gomez’s character, club homegrown status, and willingness to sacrifice individual glory for the squad will be an incredibly tough task for Richard Hughes and the recruitment team this summer.
If Sunday against Brentford is to be his Anfield farewell, the Kop owes him one almighty send-off.
